Special Report: How to Avoid Memory Embarrassment

Memory Embarrassment is what you get when you forget someone’s name. (Doh!)

(Download .pdf version of this article)

SEINFELD SCENARIO:
There is a classic episode of the Seinfeld TV show in which Jerry has forgotten the name of his date. And, since he’s already gone out with her, it’s too late for him to ask her name again. So he spends the rest of the episode trying to figure it out, in various humorous ways, but doesn’t.  She notices that he’s forgotten and breaks up with him for not being honest.
It’s funny and painful because we can all relate to it.

LOST OPPORTUNITY:
Has this ever happened to you?
You’re at a social function talking with someone that you’ve just met. But you can’t say their name, because you forget it about a minute after they told you. But you don’t want them to know that you’ve forgotten their name. And, the longer that you talk with them, the more embarrassed you’ll be to admit that you forgot.
And, it gets worse: Then and old friend comes up to you and you have to introduce these people. But you can’t because you don’t remember the name of the new person. You want to AVOID EMBARRASSMENT, so you say nothing- and hope that your friend doesn’t say, “Aren’t you going to introduce us?”
So, maybe you’ve lost out on a possible business or social contact. Maybe this person is someone that you might have connected with, but the connection is broken because you’ve forgotten a name.

LOST JOB:

Here is Sue’s story:
Sue came to a company for a job interview. There were five men in the interview that she was introduced to. About halfway through, the interviewer asked her, “What do you know about John Brown?” Sue paused for a moment to think about that. She couldn’t remember learning, in school, about anyone named John Brown. She considered bluffing, but thought better of it. So she answered, “I don’t know. I’ve never heard that name.” The interviewer said to her, “Yes you did. He was the third person you were introduced to today!”
Sue was mortified. She felt terrible. She felt embarrassed. And she was so distracted that she blew the rest of the interview and didn’t get the job.
This is a true story. It happened to her years ago, but she still remembers THE PAIN OF THE MOMENT.

So, we know the pain and embarrassment that forgetting names can cause. You may understand that it can result in lost opportunities; lost business contacts; and lost income. Now, let me tell you how remembering names can do just the opposite: how remembering names can CREATE OPPORTUNITIES.

A GREAT FIRST IMPRESSION:
I was at a business-networking meeting. The purpose of the meeting was to make new business contacts. There were 22 people in the room. I was the only guest. Each of the business people was given a couple of minutes to introduce themselves and their business. As a guest, I went last. I started my introduction by RECITING THE NAMES OF EVERYONE IN THE ROOM. Then I introduced myself and told about my business.
Do you think that when I told about my business, that I had everyone’s earnest attention? You can bet on it!
Do you think that these people remembered me and thought about this later? Of course!
It’s a basic principle: If you want people to remember you, THEN REMEMBER THEM!
Would you like to be able to do this? You can, and I can help you. I guarantee it!

AN EVEN BIGGER IMPACT:
I was speaking at a company event. Before dinner there was a social time, a cocktail hour. During that time I met at least 80 people. After dinner, it was time to speak. I started the program by reciting the names of the 80 people that I’d met! I looked at the people that I’d met, and their names popped into my mind, and I was able to recall them.
If the people in the audience remember anything that I said that night, you know the first thing they’ll recall is that I remembered their name. And you know that what I said that evening became much more important to this audience because I demonstrated that they were important to me.
So, here’s another basic principle: You will become more important to people when you show that THEY are important to you. This is a huge point for anyone in sales, or for anyone who is in management and needs the cooperation of people. And one of the best ways to quickly show people that they are important to you is to remember their name!

The BENEFITS of remembering people’s names are huge:

  • Gain admiration and esteem of others
  • Gain an advantage in job interviews
  • Get laser-focused attention from people you’re meeting
  • Turn prospects into customers
  • Increase your income
  • Make friends and influence people
  • Make yourself more memorable to others
  • Gain personal confidence in yourself

So how is it done?

I can introduce the topic in this short report. But I can’t explain it all here. If I had 39 minutes, I could teach you how to do it so well that you could immediately begin using these Memory Techniques to your advantage. Of course, at first it may seem a little bit hard to do. But as you apply the methods and put them into practice, it becomes easier and easier, until finally, it is a regular habit that you just do all the time. Then you’ll really see these benefits come into your life.

I said that a complete lesson would take 39 minutes because that’s the length of the first audio CD in the Memory Magic: Power course. The first CD in this course is called ‘Remembering Names and Faces’. This lesson is a recording of me teaching a student how to remember names. You’ve already read about the student. Her name is Sue.

Sue said, “I wished that I’d had this information years ago. I could have really used it.”

Before I give you a brief description of the method, you need to really believe something: You can do this! You can remember names of people that you just met. When I first started learning to remember names years ago I didn’t think that I could remember very many names. So I didn’t try.

My Story:
I started remembering names as a professional magician.  I started doing it by accident. During one small show, I asked the name of each of the 20 people in the audience. And, for some reason, I remembered them and recited them all from stage. Well, the audience was so impressed! It was as if I’d done some type of amazing magic trick! I was also shocked. But not by what I did. I was shocked by the audience’s reaction! They really were impressed. Then I realized something: people really, REALLY like it when you remember their names. They enjoyed that more than any of the tricks that I did. (Unfortunately the unplanned, impromptu activity was more entertaining to the audience than my magic show!)
So, after that, I tried to remember the names of all of my audiences. Of course, I couldn’t do it for big audiences because I was just learning how to do it. At first, it was really hard for me to remember the names of 30 people in the audience. It took all of my mental attention. But I became better at it. After awhile I gained confidence. I knew that if I was performing for an audience of 40 people that I could remember their names.
But I never thought that I could do 80 or 100 names. That was just too many! So I thought… So, I never tried. And my doubt in myself prevented me from attempting it. But eventually I tried and succeeded! Now I’ve memorized the names of 100 people in the audience. Now I know that I can do it.

Your story:
I realize that you may doubt your ability to remember the names of 100 people. But, for now, you don’t really need to do that, do you? You’d probably just like to remember the names of everyone at your next business meeting; or even, the names of your new prospects and customers.
Well, first, you need to believe that you can learn to do it. If you don’t think that you can do it, then you aren’t going to try, are you? It’s just like lifting weights. If you do it often enough your muscles will get stronger- it’s unavoidable. The same is true with learning to remember names. If you exercise your mind in this way, you’ll get better at it.

You see, memory isn’t a “gift.” Some people think that you’re either born with a “great memory” or you aren’t. Not true. Memory ability is a skill. It is something that you can learn and get better at. Believe it! That’s the first step toward a better memory.

BASIC MEMORY TECHNIQUES:  A Mini-Course:

The purpose of this special report is to introduce the concepts that are taught on the audio CD. If you like it, then you can get the complete, detailed lesson on CD. I think that you’ll find these concepts fairly easy and fun. It’s exciting to gain a new, fun skill that could really help you to earn more money. Later, I’ll tell you how to get the audio CD.

Technique 1: Remember to remember.
Just trying to remember someone’s name will improve your name recall. It needs to be a habit. But this one small habit will make a difference.

Technique 2: Imagination
One of the great benefits of the Memory Magic: Power course on CD is that you’ll hear me teaching a student how to remember. So, it’s not just a monologue- it’s a dialogue. The student may ask the same types of questions that you’d have. So, it’s more interesting and therefore easier to learn.
And, one of the first things that I say to Sue is that to remember you need to have a great imagination. If you can imagine some crazy images, then you can remember someone’s name. In fact, crazy images, are the key to remembering anything- not just names. But Memory Magic CD 1 just teaches how to remember names and faces.
You have a good imagination don’t you? You grew up watching cartoons on TV didn’t you? If you can imagine crazy images, like you’d see on a kid’s cartoon, then you can improve your memory to remember names.
The multiple tracks on the CD teach you how to apply your imagination to remember names

Technique 3: Look at the face
When you’re trying to remember someone’s name, you’ll need to also remember his or her face. So, this course will teach you how to really look at a face and choose a memorable characteristic. Faces are easier to remember than names. That’s why people often say, “I remember your face, but I can’t remember your name.” And they never say, “I remember your name, but I can’t recall the face.”

Technique 4: Link the name to the face
After you’ve made a crazy image to represent someone’s name, and you’ve studied their face to choose something memorable, then you need to link the name to the face using some type of crazy picture or story. If this seems like a difficult suggestion, just know that, when you hear the complete explanation on the audio CD it will make sense to you. It really is fun!

I realize that this may seem like a crazy way to remember someone, but it works. I know. I do it all the time. It really does work. Even though the explanation here seems long, once you learn to do it, it will be very quick. You’ll automatically convert someone’s name to a crazy image and link it to their face instantly. What’s the speed of thought? That’s how fast you’ll be able to do this. By the time someone has said their name, you can have it burned into your memory. Once you learn these techniques, you’ll be able to apply it with very little practice. It’s fun and easy!

But I have a special reference to make this even easier to do. I’ll describe it in just a moment. But first I have a really special offer for you.
